Rome Free Academy presented its 2020 musical Cabaret on January 11th. The performance featured a variety of musical theater pieces by current RFA students and alumni. This year marked the twelfth annual Cabaret.

The performance was free and open to the public, but donations were accepted at intermission. All proceeds went towards RFA’s spring production of Disney’s Newsies, to be performed April 23-25.

The cabaret revue, entitled “Seasons of Love”, included music from Rent, Oklahoma, The Lion King, The Book of Mormon, Footloose, Kiss Me Kate, Pippin, A New Brain, and many more Broadway shows. It also included a mix of solo, duet, trio, quartet, and full ensemble pieces to entertain the audience throughout the evening.

Jake Meiss, director of bands at RFA and producer of the Cabaret, began the musical revue in 2009 as a way for current students and alumni of the RFA musicals to perform together. In 2010, an ensemble of RFA students was added to allow for the performance of pieces that require a fuller choral sound. Each year, the grand finale is a medley of one song from each musical produced by RFA since 1997, when the school musical became an annual event.

Meiss says he’s glad and thankful for so many talented performers that have come back to perform.  “It’s fun to see alumni sit side by side with RFA freshmen, singing together and having fun,” said Meiss. He added “all of the soloists are sounding great, and we get great alumni involvement each year – this year we have some alumni traveling from all over to be part of this show.  It’s great for our younger students to learn from these seasoned performers.” The singers accompanied by a pit orchestra comprised of current students, alumni, and Rome music teachers.

"The Cabaret is a great opportunity for all of us to learn and share music that we may not otherwise have known," says alumna and co-producer Melissa Rashford.  "It not only introduces our younger students to a wide range of musical theater pieces, but it also gives alumni the chance to perform songs from shows and movies that have been written in the years since we have graduated."
